Merdeka’s Commitment to Climate Solutions at INVIROTECH 2026
Merdeka Group participated in INVIROTECH 2026, a series of events commemorating World Environment Day 2026 organized by the Ministry of Environment/ Environmental Control Agency. Held on 11–13 June 2026 at the Jakarta Convention Center, the event carried the theme “Green Solution Technology for Climate Action.”
At the event, Merdeka Group was represented through its exhibition booth, showcasing videos, posters, infographics, and interactive activities highlighting ESG achievements and sustainability initiatives across its operations. The exhibition featured three key entities within the Group: PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk as the parent company, along with its subsidiaries PT Merdeka Battery Materials Tbk and PT Merdeka Gold Resources Tbk.
On the first day of the event, Minister of Environment, Moh. Jumhur Hidayat visited the Merdeka Group booth. The visit provided an opportunity to present the company’s sustainability initiatives and achievements.
In addition to participating through the exhibition, Merdeka Group also took part as a speaker in the CEO Talks session titled “The Circular Titans: Pushing the Boundaries of Green Technology in Industrial-Scale Emissions, Residue, and Waste Management.” Bahtiar Manurung, ESG and Climate Change Manager, represented Merdeka as a speaker during the session.
During the CEO Talks, Bahtiar explained how Merdeka Group is future-proofing its mining business through the implementation of circularity, decarbonization, and responsible mining principles.
Merdeka’s circularity initiatives include the utilization of spent ore from the Wetar Copper Mine, which was previously unused and considered an environmental liability. In addition, Merdeka Group utilizes low-grade limonite nickel ore from the SCM mine that had previously remained unutilized due to its limited economic value, converting it into feedstock for the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant.
Bahtiar noted that approximately one million tonnes of spent ore from the Wetar Copper Mine are utilized annually as feedstock for Merdeka Group’s HPAL plant. Meanwhile, limonite production reached 14.7 million wet metric tonnes (wmt) in 2025, contributing US$34.2 million in government royalty revenues.
As part of its decarbonization efforts, Merdeka Group has developed a slurry pipeline to transport limonite ore slurry from SCM’s Feed Preparation Plant (FPP) to the HPAL facility, replacing the previous truck-haulage method. The use of the slurry pipeline significantly reduces fuel consumption and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition, Bahtiar explained that Merdeka Group implements responsible mining principles through environmental and risk management, respect for human rights, the application of responsible labor practices, occupational health and safety, community engagement and development, the provision of effective grievance mechanisms, as well as strong corporate governance and business ethics. The implementation of these principles not only ensures compliance with responsible mining standards but also supports the company’s continued access to global markets.
Merdeka Group’s participation in INVIROTECH 2026 reflects the company’s commitment to contributing to climate change solutions and supporting the national clean energy transition agenda.
