Merdeka Supports the Acceleration of the Low-Carbon Economy Transition at the Maybank Indonesia Sustainable Finance Forum 2026
Merdeka Copper Gold reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy through its participation in the Maybank Indonesia Sustainable Finance Forum 2026, held at The St. Regis Jakarta on 30 June 2026. The forum brought together regulators, industry leaders, investors, and business executives to discuss policy directions for industrial transition while strengthening leadership perspectives in sustainable investment decisions-making.
The event was opened by the President & Group CEO of Maybank, followed by keynote addresses from Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Industry, Faisol Riza, and the Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Friderica Widyasari Dewi. The speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration among the government, the financial sector, and the private sector tp accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy by strengthening the sustainable finance ecosystem, developing carbon markets, and fostering global partnerships.
One of the forum’s key sessions was a panel discussion titled “Translating Policy Signals to Sustainable Business Growth,” which explored how government policies can be translated into investment opportunities, sustainable business growth, and transition strategies aligned with corporate objectives. During the session, Bahtiar Manurung, ESG and Climate Change Manager of PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk, joined Agus Firmansyah (Financial Services Authority/OJK), Dewi Muliana (Ministry of Industry), and Sharan Burrow (Chair, ClimateWorks Centre Board). The discussion was moderated by Zain Bador, Director of Sustainable Business, Maybank Group.
As the only industry representative on the panel, Bahtiar emphasized that while the government has provided direction through various climate-related policies, the strongest transformation signals today are also being driven by evolving global market requirements. One notable example is the implementation of the EU Battery Regulation, which is raising expectations for responsible mining practices and sustainable mineral supply chains. In response to these developments, Merdeka has embarked on its transition toward a low-carbon economy by establishing the Merdeka Group Net Zero Commitment and Policy, strengthening its climate governance framework, and implementing a range of decarbonization initiatives across its business units.
During the discussion, Bahtiar also highlighted the importance of ensuring the availability of affordable renewable energy, particularly in remote areas, maintaining a consistent and predictable regulatory framework, and expanding access to green finance to accelerate the industrial transition toward a low-carbon economy.
Through active participation in strategic forums such as the Maybank Indonesia Sustainable Finance Forum 2026, Merdeka continues to contribute to accelerating decarbonization across the mining sector while supporting the development of policies and financing mechanisms that foster a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy.
